An unprecedented number of major employers, including companies like Yodel, Royal Mail and Asda, have come together, spanning the logistics, transport and supply chain sectors, to form the Smart Business Academy and lead a sector-wide bid for Employer Ownership of Skills funding. Their aim is to improve the perception of careers in their sectors and hopefully create business growth and jobs.
Kate Williard, the director of corporate affairs at teh Stobart Group, said “The Smart Business Academy is a hugely exciting opportunity for major employers to collaborate to deliver tangible results for our businesses.”
The initiative hopes to:
- Collaborate to identify the skills requirements of the current and future workforce
- Ensure they can attract and develop talent to fulfil business growth plans
- Deliver a programme of employer-led training and investment in skills across their industries through the Employer Ownership of Skills funding.
The list of contributing businesses also includes Arla Foods, Arriva, Bibby Distribution, Kuehne + Nagel, Sellafield, Stena Line, Stobart Group and TNT.
Paul Byrne, the development director of Bibby Distribution, commented: “By working in partnership we have the ability to develop a robust and powerful framework to improve skills, enhance our workforce and create a sustainable pathway for careers in the logistics industry.”
